Citellus dotti was named by Hibbard (1954). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Buis Ranch, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in Oklahoma.
It was recombined as Spermophilus dotti by Hemming (1956), Shotwell (1968) and Kelly (1997).
