Taxonomy
Citellus howelli was named by Hibbard (1941). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rexroad KU Locality 3, which is in a Blancan terrestrial horizon in the Rexroad Formation of Kansas.
It was recombined as Spermophilus howelli by Hemming (1956), Shotwell (1968), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Kelly (1994).
