Taxonomy
Citellus mckayensis was named by Shotwell (1956). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is McKay Reservoir, which is in a Hemphillian pond sandstone in the McKay Formation of Oregon.

It was recombined as Spermophilus mckayensis by Hemming (1956), Shotwell (1968) and Kelly (1997).
