Citellus tuitus was named by Hay (1921). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Anita, which is in an Irvingtonian terrestrial horizon in Arizona.
It was recombined as Spermophilus tuitus by Hemming (1956) and Kurten and Anderson (1980).
