Antilocapra garciae was named by Webb (1973) [type of subgenus Subantilocapra]. Its type locality is Swift Mine, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial carbonate in the Peace River Formation of Florida.
It was recombined as Sphenophalos garciae by Richards and McCrossin (1991) and Janis and Manning (1998).
