Viverra putorius was named by Linnaeus (1758). It is extant.

It was recombined as Mephitis putorius by Cope (1896); it was considered a nomen vanum by Allen (1901); it was recombined as Spilogale putorius by Thomas (1911), Hay (1923), Hay (1930), Hall (1936), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Mead and Mead (1989), Baskin (1998) and Marmi et al. (2004).
