Steneofiber complexus was named by Douglass (1902) [Xu 1996 falsely implies that Martin named the species].

It was recombined as Monosaulax complexus by Stirton (1935); it was synonymized subjectively with Neatocastor hesperus by Korth (1996), Hayes (2000) and Tabrum and Nichols (2001).
