Stenogale robusta was named by Cope (1890). It is extant.

It was recombined as Potamotherium robusta by Matthew and Gidley (1904); it was recombined as Brachygale robusta by Peterson (1910); it was recombined as Sthenictis robustus by Shotwell and Russell (1963) and Voorhies (1990).
