Taxonomy
Stypolophus whitiae was named by Cope (1882).

It was recombined as Sinopa whitiae by Scott (1892), Matthew (1899), Matthew (1901) and Matthew (1909); it was recombined as Tritemnodon whitiae by Matthew and Granger (1915) and Van Valen (1965); it was synonymized subjectively with Tritemnodon strenuus by Guthrie (1971), Gingerich and Deutsch (1989) and Gunnell (1998); it was misspelled as Stypolophus whiteae by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Gazinocyon whitiae by Rana et al. (2015).
