Submerycochoerus bannackensis

Mammalia - Merycoidodontidae

Taxonomy
Ticholeptus bannackensis was named by Douglass (1907). Its type specimen is CM 995, a partial skeleton (a portion of the anterior upper part of the skull, a mandible, and the greater portion of a skeleton), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grasshopper Creek, which is in a Harrisonian terrestrial horizon in Montana. It is the type species of Submerycochoerus.

It was recombined as Hypsiops bannackensis by Lander (1998) and Tabrum and Nichols (2001); it was recombined as Submerycochoerus bannackensis by Schultz and Falkenbach (1950), Stevens and Stevens (2007) and Stevens et al. (2023).

Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
C. B. Schultz and C. H. Falkenbach 1950 (Pseudomesoreodon rolli)SKULL: Intermediate in length between that of P. rooneyi and of 'IP. boulderensis; brachycephalic; low; frontals very wide; posterior border of nasals extending posteriorly beyond anterior border of orbit (nasals not preserved in holotype); posterior superior border of squamosal of zygomatic arch extending posteriorly to a point above middle of postglenoid process; malar deep below orbit, equal to that of P. rooneyi, but considerably less than in P. boulderensis; paroccipital process wider at base than in other two species of genus; postglenoid process more massive than in P. rooneyi.
MANDIBLE: (Unknown.)
DENTITION: [known from P2-P4 only] larger than in other two species of this genus; molar series longer and heavier than in type of P. rooneyi and slightly heavier but approximately same length as in holotype of ?P. boulderensis.
LIMBS: (Unknown).
C. B. Schultz and C. H. Falkenbach 1950SKULL: Size large (approaching size of Merycochoerus matthewi); nasals greatly retracted to anterior portion of P2; anterior nasal-maxilla con tact above P3 ; zygomatic arch extending posteriorly to a point above the posterior border of the postglenoid process; large and deep lacrimal fossa; small facial vacuity. (See generic description.)
MANDIBLE: Similar to examples of Hypsiops. (See generic description.)
DENTITION: Series longer than any known examples of Hypsiops; smaller than in examples of Merycochoerus. (See generic description.)
LIMBS: Robust, somewhat longer and heavier than examples of H. brachymelis; lighter and shorter than examples of Promerycochoerus or Merycochoerus.
M. S. Stevens et al. 2023Same as for genus [Skull only slightly smaller than M. matthewi but larger than Hypsiops; very long nasals, with the narial notch greatly retracted to the anterior portion of P2; nasal-maxillary contact above P3; robust, upturned zygomatic arches that reach back to a point above the posterior border of the postglenoid process; deep malars and a large lacrimal fossa; small facial vacuity; infraorbital foramen above P4.]
