Sylvilagus bensonensis was named by Gazin (1942). Its type locality is Post Ranch, which is in a Blancan lacustrine horizon in the St. David Formation of Arizona.
It was recombined as Aluralagus bensonensis by Downey (1968), Downey (1970), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and White (1991).
