Megaceratops acer was named by Cope (1873) [genotype].

It was recombined as Symborodon acer by Cope (1873), Cope (1875) and Osborn (1902); it was recombined as Megacerops acer by Osborn (1929), Galbreath (1953) and Mader (1989); it was considered a nomen dubium by Mader (1998).
