Symborodon altirostris was named by Cope (1873).

It was synonymized subjectively with Symborodon acer by Osborn (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Megacerops acer by Osborn (1929) and Mader (1989); it was considered a nomen dubium by Mader (1998).
