Megaceratops heloceras was named by Cope (1873).

It was recombined as Symborodon heloceras by Cope (1873), Cope (1875) and Osborn (1902); it was recombined as Menodus heloceras by Osborn (1929) and Emry (1975); it was recombined as Menops heloceras by Mader (1989) and Mader (1998).
