Australophyllum was named by Stumm (1949) [Sepkoski's age data: D Gedi D Give Sepkoski's reference number: 422]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Ptenophyllidae by Hill (1956); to Endophyllidae by Merriam (1973) and Merriam (1974); to Ptenophyllinae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
