Taxonomy
Arvicola borealis was named by Richardson (1828). It is extant.

It was recombined as Synaptomys borealis by Osgood (1907), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Hall (1981); it was recombined as Mictomys borealis by von Koenigswald and Martin (1984), Barnosky and Rasmussen (1988) and Wood and Barnosky (1994); it was recombined as Synaptomys (Mictomys) borealis by Seymour (2004).
