Taxonomy
Eutamias ateles was named by Hall (1930). Its type specimen is UCMP 28521, a set of teeth (Worn right M1, M2, and M3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rodent Hill, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Barstow Formation of California.
It was recombined as Tamias (Neotamias) ateles by Bryant (1945); it was recombined as Nototamias ateles by Pratt and Morgan (1989); it was recombined as Tamias ateles by James (1963), Black (1963), Lindsay (1972), Sutton and Korth (1995) and Schiebout and Ting (2000).
