Tamias quadrimaculatus was named by Gray (1867). It is extant.

It was recombined as Eutamias quadrimaculatus by Merriam (1897), Howell (1929) and Hall (1981); it was recombined as Neotamias quadrimaculatus by Piaggio and Spicer (2001).
