Tamias minimus was named by Bachman (1839). It is extant.

It was recombined as Neotamias minimus by Piaggio and Spicer (2001); it was recombined as Eutamias minimus by Miller and Rehn (1901), Howell (1929), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Hall (1981) and Storer (2004).
