Taxonomy
Tamias obscurus was named by Allen (1890). It is extant.

It was recombined as Eutamias obscurus by Merriam (1897), Howell (1929), Callahan (1975) and Hall (1981); it was synonymized subjectively with Tamias merriami by Blankenship and Bradley (1984); it was recombined as Neotamias obscurus by Piaggio and Spicer (2001).
