Oxydactylus brachyodontus was named by Peterson (1904). Its type specimen is CMNH 664, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Tanymykter brachyodontus by Honey and Taylor (1978), Tedford et al. (1987), Honey et al. (1998) and Honey (2007).
