Lophiodon validus was named by Marsh (1871).

It was recombined as Tapiravus validus by Marsh (1877), Hay (1902), Schlaikjer (1937), Gazin and Collins (1950), Olsen (1960), Schoch (1984) and Colbert and Schoch (1998).
