Barytichisma was named by Moore and Jeffords (1945) [Sepkoski's age data: C Serp-l C Mosc Sepkoski's reference number: 163]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Amplexizaphrentis by Hill (1956).

It was assigned to Hapsiphyllinae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
