Taxonomy
Ischyrotomus tapensis was named by Wilson (1940). Its type locality is Tapo Canyon (Upper), which is in an Uintan terrestrial horizon in the Sespe Formation of California.
It was recombined as Leptotomus tapensis by Black (1971); it was recombined as Tapomys tapensis by Wood (1962) and Wood (1976).
