Batangophyllum was named by Wu and Zhang (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise]. Its type is Batangophyllum sinense.

It was assigned to Amygdalophyllinae by Wu and Zhang (1979); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
