Taxonomy
Ursus taxus was named by Schreber (1778). It is extant.

It was recombined as Taxidea taxus by Rhoads (1894), Schultz and Howard (1935), Hall (1936), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Mead and Mead (1989) and Marmi et al. (2004).
