Sus pecari was named by Link (1795). It is extant.

It was recombined as Tayassu pecari by Fischer (1814), Palmer (1897), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Wright (1998), Agnarsson and May-Collado (2008), Gasparini (2013) and Dutra et al. (2017).
