Taxonomy
Rhinoceros meridianus was named by Leidy (1865).

It was recombined as Aphelops meridianus by Cope (1875), Dumble (1894), Matthew (1918) and Wilson (1956); it was considered a nomen dubium by Matthew (1932); it was recombined as Teleoceras meridianum by Prothero and Manning (1987) and Prothero (2005).
