Rhinoceros proterus was named by Leidy (1885) [said by Allen 1926 to originally have been assigned to Aphelops]. It is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Aphelops proterus by Cope (1892); it was synonymized subjectively with Aphelops fossiger by Leidy and Lucas (1896); it was synonymized subjectively with Teleoceras fossiger by Hay (1902) and Osborn (1904); it was recombined as Teleoceras proterus by Allen (1926) and Simpson (1930); it was recombined as Teleoceras proterum by Prothero and Manning (1987) and Prothero (2005).
