It was assigned to Oxyaenidae by Peterson (1919); to Limnocyonini by Van Valen (1967); to Limnocyonidae by Marsh (1872) and Gunnell (1998); and to Limnocyoninae by Wortman (1902), Morlo and Gunnell (2005), Solé (2013) and Borths et al. (2016).
