It was synonymized subjectively with Tomarctus brevirostris by Matthew (1924), VanderHoof and Gregory (1940) and Olsen (1956); it was recombined as Tomarctus hippophaga by Storer (1975), Skinner et al. (1977) and Wang et al. (1999).
