Taxonomy
Ectocion collinus was named by Russell (1929). Its type locality is Cochrane 1, which is in a Tiffanian terrestrial horizon in the Porcupine Hills Formation of Canada.

It was synonymized subjectively with Phenacodus vortmani by West (1976).
