Taxonomy

Oxyclaenus was named by Cope (1884) [first use as a genus by Scott 1892; Cope 1884 had used it only as a subgenus]. It is not extant. Its type is Mioclaenus cuspidatus. It is the type genus of Oxyclaenidae.

It was assigned to Cete by Archibald (1998); to Oxyclaenidae by Scott (1892), Hay (1902), Hay (1930) and Eberle (2003); to Acreodi by Tabuce et al. (2011); and to Arctocyonidae by Atteberry and Eberle (2021).

Synonyms

Microclaenodon was named by Scott (1892). It was considered monophyletic by Williamson and Carr (2007).

It was synonymized subjectively with Oxyclaenus by Williamson and Carr (2007).

It was assigned to Triisodontidae by Scott (1892), Hay (1902) and Hay (1930); to Mesonychoidea by Szalay and Gould (1966); to Acreodi by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Cete by Archibald (1998).
Thangorodrim was named by Van Valen (1978). Its type is Thangorodrim thalion.

It was synonymized subjectively with Oxyclaenus by Robison (1986) and Williamson (1996).
