Taxonomy
Plesiothomomys potomacensis was named by Gidley and Gazin (1933). Its type specimen is USNM 8166, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cumberland Cave, which is in an Irvingtonian cave horizon in Maryland.
It was recombined as Thomomys potomacensis by Kurten and Anderson (1980).
