Taxonomy
Trogosus was named by Leidy (1871). It is not extant. Its type is Trogosus castoridens. It was considered paraphyletic by Miyata (2007).

It was assigned to Esthonychidae by Leidy (1871) and Carroll (1988); to Tillodontia by Wang and Jin (2004); and to Trogosinae by Gazin (1953), Lucas and Schoch (1998) and Miyata (2007).
