Titanops elatus was named by Marsh (1887).
It was synonymized subjectively with Titanotherium robustum by Osborn and Wortman (1895); it was recombined as Titanotherium elatum by Osborn (1896); it was synonymized subjectively with Brontotherium gigas by Hay (1902), Osborn (1902) and Osborn (1929); it was recombined as Megacerops elatus by Mader (1989) and Mader and Alexander (1995); it was considered a nomen dubium by Mader (1998).
