Taxonomy
Tephrocyon kelloggi was named by Merriam (1911). Its type specimen is UCMP 11562, a mandible (lower jaw with dentition), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Virgin Valley, which is in a Barstovian terrestrial horizon in the Virgin Valley Formation of Nevada.
It was recombined as Tomarctus kelloggi by Matthew (1924), Bode (1935), Henshaw (1942), Green (1948), Shotwell (1968) and Munthe (1988); it was recombined as Cynodesmus kelloggi by Stirton (1940) and Downs (1956); it was recombined as Cynarctus kelloggi by Wang (1994); it was recombined as Paracynarctus kelloggi by Wang et al. (1999) and Wang et al. (2008).
