Mioclaenus subtrigonus was named by Cope (1881).

It was recombined as Tricentes subtrigonus by Cope (1884), Scott (1892), Matthew (1937) and Gazin (1969); it was recombined as Mimotricentes subtrigonus by Van Valen and Sloan (1965), Rigby (1980) and Burger (2007).
