Gomberellus was named by Dumitrica et al. (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi]. Its type is Gomberellus hircicornus. It is the type genus of Gomberellidae.
It was assigned to Gomberellidae by De Wever et al. (2001); and to Nassellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
