Vulpes littoralis was named by Baird (1857). It is extant.

It was recombined as Urocyon littoralis by Bourguignat (1875), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Wayne et al. (1993), Wilson and Reeder (1993), Wang et al. (2008) and Rick et al. (2009).
