Ustatochoerus profectus

Taxonomy
Merychyus (Metoreodon) profectus was named by Matthew and Cook (1909). Its type specimen is AMNH 14055, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Metoreodon relictus profectus by Cook (1912); it was synonymized subjectively with Metoreodon major by Matthew (1924); it was recombined as Ticholeptus profectus by Loomis (1924); it was recombined as Metoreodon profectus by Thorpe (1937); it was recombined as Ustatochoerus profectus by Schultz and Falkenbach (1941), Schultz and Falkenbach (1947) and Stevens and Stevens (1989); it was considered a nomen vanum by Lander (1998).

Falkenbach 1941SKULL.-Smaller than that of U. major and larger than that of U. medius; fan-shaped occipital region not as wide as in U. major; brain case slightly more inflated than in U. major; nasals shorter than in U. medius and decidedly longer than in U. major, and with less retraction than in the latter species; anterior tip of nasals retracted to region above P 2 ; paroccipital process long and tapered; postglenoid process not as heavy as in U. major.
MANDIBLE.-Typical of the genus, intermediate in size between those of U. medius and U. major.
DENTITION.-Superior and inferior series intermediate in length between those of U. medius and U. major.
LIMBs.-Shorter and lighter than in U. major; longer and heavier than in U. medius.
