Vespertilio borealis was named by Muller (1776).

It was recombined as Atalapha borealis by Rhoades (1895); it was recombined as Lasiurus borealis by Sherman (1952), Choate and Birney (1968), Kurten and Anderson (1980) and Rabon et al. (2000).
