Miacis canavus was named by Cope (1881) [misattributed to Matthew 1915 by Guthrie 1971].

It was recombined as Uintacyon canavus by Wortman and Matthew (1899) and Hay (1902); it was recombined as Prodaphaenus canavus by Wortman (1901); it was recombined as Vulpavus canavus by Matthew (1909) and Matthew and Granger (1915).
