Ceriaster was named by Lindström (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m S Ldov-u Sepkoski's reference number: 651]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Stauriidae by Hill (1981); and to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002).
