Washakius insignis

Taxonomy

Washakius insignis was named by Leidy (1873) [type is from an unknown locality in the Bridger Formation and was "given to Dr. Carter by a Shoshone Indian and then sent on to Leidy" (Gazin 1958)]. Its type specimen is ANSP 10332, a mandible (portion of right ramus of mandible with M3 and M3), and it is a 3D body fossil. It is the type species of Washakius.

It was recombined as Anaptomorphus insignis by Hay (1902).

Synonyms

Shoshonius laurae was named by Simpson (1959) [in McGrew et al.]. It is not extant. Its type specimen is AMNH 55672. Its type locality is Morrow Creek Locality 10, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Green River Formation of Wyoming.

It was synonymized subjectively with Washakius insignis by Szalay (1976), Bown (1982) and Honey (1990); it was recombined as Washakius laurae by Gunnell et al. (1992).
