Taxonomy
Xenotherium unicum was named by Douglass (1905) ["genotype"]. Its type locality is McCarty's Mountain, which is in a Chadronian wet floodplain tuff in the Chadron Formation of Montana.

It was recombined as Epoicotherium unicum by Simpson (1927), Scott (1941), Rose (1978) and Tabrum and Nichols (2001).
