Taxonomy
Amphicyon americanus was named by Wortman (1901). Its type specimen is YPM 10061, a maxilla (palate with left P2-M2, right P3-M3), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Ysengrinia americana by Hunt (2002).
