Mastodon tapiroides was named by Cuvier (1824) [apparently spelt Mastodonte tapiroide by Cuvier]. It is not extant.
It was recombined as Mastodon (Zygolophodon) tapiroides by Vacek (1877); it was synonymized subjectively with Mammut americanum by Hay (1902); it was recombined as Zygolophodon tapiroides by Madden (1980); it was considered a nomen dubium by Hopwood (1935); it was synonymized subjectively with Zygolophodon proavus by Lambert and Shoshani (1998).
