Crythiosaurus was named by Gilmore (1943). It is not extant. Its type is Crythiosaurus mongoliensis. It is the type genus of Crythiosaurinae.

It was assigned to Amphisbaenidae by Gilmore (1943); and to Crythiosaurinae by Vanzolini (1951).
