Chostophyllum was named by Pedder (1982) [Sepkoski's age data: D Eife-u D Give-u Sepkoski's reference number: 164]. It is not extant. Its type is Chostophyllum metula.
It was assigned to Rugosa by Sepkoski (2002); to Disphyllinae by Brownlaw and Jell (2008); and to Charactophyllidae by Abbasi et al. (2014).
